This winter, we set out on a 34-day sailing adventure from Les Sables d’Olonne, France, to Greece. It was an unforgettable experience, braving the elements and the sea during the colder months. While many might imagine sailing as sun-soaked and tranquil, our journey was a testament to the beauty and challenges of winter sailing. Here's how it all unfolded.

Les Sables d’Olonne: 10 days Immersed in the Vendée Globe and Les Sables d'Olonne
We started in Les Sables d’Olonne, a town alive with the spirit of adventure despite the chilly November air. This seaside town is home to the Vendée Globe, a world-famous solo, non-stop, and unassisted round-the-world sailing race. The energy was electric, and the harbor bustled with sailors, teams, and fans preparing for the race’s start.
For over a week, we soaked in the excitement as tourists from all over also arrived to witness history once again. We also explored what the town has to offer, from the picturesque view, breathtaking landscape and the walks that makes this town special.

The First Leg: Rough Seas and Finding Balance
When we finally set sail in the beginning of November, the Atlantic greeted us with choppy waves, biting winds, and gray skies. The sea’s power was humbling, and I wasn’t prepared for how seasick I would feel. For three long days, I struggled to find my footing, questioning whether I was cut out for this.
But there was one saving grace: the sun. Despite the wintry conditions, the sun shone brightly all day long, wrapping me in its warmth as I sat in the cockpit. Those hours were my refuge. With the vast ocean stretching endlessly ahead and sunlight glinting off the waves, I found moments of peace even as my body adjusted to the constant motion.
By day four, something shifted. The sickness subsided, and I found a rhythm in the boat’s movement. The waves, once daunting, became a steady companion. I began to feel at home on the water. By day seven, we started seeing land again!

Landfall in Portugal: A Welcome Respite
After a week at sea, we arrived in Portugal. Touching solid ground felt surreal. We docked in the Marina to avoid the bad weather. I couldn’t shake the sensation that the earth itself was moving, echoing the rhythm of the waves. It was disorienting but fascinating, like my body wasn’t ready to leave the sea behind.
We spent three days in this warm and welcoming country, enjoying the stark contrast between the wintery sea and Portugal’s lively coastal towns. The seafood was divine, the people kind, and the streets buzzing with life despite the season. It was hard to leave, but the sea was calling us onward.

​A Brief Stop in Gibraltar
Our next stop was Gibraltar, but this was no vacation. We docked just long enough to refuel, with the iconic Rock of Gibraltar towering over us as we worked. The stop was quick, but even in its brevity, it left an impression. There’s something grounding about seeing such a monumental landmark during a fleeting moment in your journey.

Carboneras: Stocking Up for the Next Stretch
Two days later, we reached Carboneras, Spain. This small coastal town gave us a chance to restock supplies and enjoy a quieter slice of life onshore. Winter added a different charm to the town, with its narrow streets and local markets offering fresh produce and friendly smiles. It was a brief but refreshing pause before the next leg of our trip.

The Final Push: Four Days to Greece
We began the final leg of our journey. The four days from Sicily to Greece were marked by calm seas and long hours of reflection. Winter’s chill was ever-present, but the Mediterranean felt gentler now, as if it knew we were nearing the end of our odyssey.
I spent hours on deck, bundled against the cold, watching the horizon and thinking about how far we’d come. Nights were particularly magical, with the stars shining brighter than I’d ever seen. It was humbling to feel so small yet so connected to the vastness around me.
When the Greek coastline finally came into view, I felt a rush of joy and relief. We had made it!

​If there’s one place that truly feels like stepping into a fairytale, it’s Mount Olympus. Camping there wasn’t just a trip; it was an experience that pulled us out of the chaos of modern life and dropped me straight into nature’s embrace.

One with the Fairies : From the moment we pitched our tent, it felt like we’d entered a different realm. The air was cool and crisp, carrying the faint scent of pine and wildflowers. The forest seemed alive, with sunlight filtering through the trees like golden fairy dust. It was so peaceful that I half-expected actual fairies to pop out and say hello.

Disconnected, but More Connected - The biggest bonus? Zero cell reception. None. Nada. At first, it was a little unnerving—I mean, how would I scroll aimlessly or check the weather? But soon, it became the best gift. Without notifications buzzing or screens glowing, I felt completely present. It was just me, the mountain, and the soft symphony of rustling leaves, chirping birds, and trickling streams.

Nature’s Spa -Speaking of streams, the water on Mount Olympus is the freshest I’ve ever tasted—or bathed in. There’s nothing quite like plunging into an icy mountain stream and feeling instantly refreshed. Sure, it’s cold enough to make you gasp, but it’s also invigorating in the best way. No fancy spa could ever compare.

Magic in Simplicity - Life on the mountain was simple: cooking over a campfire, hiking through trails that led to breathtaking views, and lying under a blanket of stars at night. It felt like Olympus itself welcomed us, offering the kind of peace you can only find when you’re miles away from the nearest Wi-Fi signal.
Camping on Mount Olympus wasn’t just about escaping—it was about reconnecting. With nature, with myself, and with the magic of simply being. If you’re looking for an adventure that leaves you refreshed and a little enchanted, pack your tent and head for the home of the gods. You won’t regret it. 🌲✨

Chalkidiki is one of those places that stays with you long after you leave. Sitting in northern Greece, this stunning peninsula is shaped like a hand with three “feet” stretching into the Aegean Sea. This unique shape means that no matter where you are, the views are absolutely breathtaking. We spent a week here, and honestly, every day felt like a new adventure.

Exploring the Three "Feet"Each “foot” of Chalkidiki has its own charm. The first one, Kassandra, was lively and full of energy. We loved how it balanced nature with vibrant little towns and gorgeous beaches. Driving along its coast was like flipping through a postcard collection – pine forests on one side and sparkling blue water on the other.
The second “foot,” Sithonia, was much quieter, and that’s where we found our peace. Sithonia is full of hidden coves and unspoiled beaches, and we spent hours just hopping from one viewpoint to another. Every turn brought something new: a quaint village, a secluded bay, or a hillside blanketed with olive trees.

Relaxing in Warm Spas:
One of the highlights of our trip was stumbling upon two wonderful spas. These weren’t just any spas—they had warm, mineral-rich waters that felt like heaven after a long day of exploring. We left feeling relaxed and refreshed, ready to see more of what Chalkidiki had to offer.
Every day in Chalkidiki felt like a new chapter in the perfect getaway. We soaked up the sun on pristine beaches, enjoyed amazing Greek food (so much fresh seafood!), and just let the beauty of the place take over. It’s not just about the sights here—it’s about the feeling of being surrounded by nature and having space to breathe and unwind.
It’s a memory waiting to happen.

Meteora—hands down one of the most unreal places I’ve ever been. Picture this: massive rock towers that look like they were dropped straight out of the sky, and on top of them? Monasteries. Like, actual ancient monasteries perched so high up you wonder how anyone thought, “Yeah, let’s build up there!”

​Every day we tackled another monastery, which meant endless stairs that seemed to wind forever. And let me tell you, the combination of heat and my out-of-shape self was not a cute look. But somehow, dragging myself up those steps was totally worth it when I saw the view. Standing at the top, looking out over the valley, I felt like I was in a movie. You can’t help but just stop, breathe, and think, “Wow, this is life.”
And the footpaths? Gorgeous. Wandering through the rocks, I half expected Zeus to pop out and say, “Welcome to my backyard!” The whole place feels so mythical, and honestly, I’m not convinced it’s not magic.
Meteora isn’t just a road trip stop; it’s a full-on experience. Go for the views, stay for the what the heck, this is real?! vibes. Oh, and wear good shoes—you’ll thank me later! 

​But our true adventure lies beyond the city limits, amidst the ancient temples of Angkor Wat – a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most awe-inspiring architectural wonders in the world. As we set out to explore this vast temple complex, we're faced with a crucial decision: how best to experience its magnificence.

Just by needing to find out if a 3-day pass or a 7-day pass we should get, whether to hire a guide and a tuktuk for all the days, all of these are already an adventure by itself!

Our first day on the Angkor grounds is dedicated to witnessing the ethereal sunrise over Angkor Wat, a spectacle that leaves us in awe of the temple's timeless beauty. We decide to stay within the temple complex until late, delving into its myriad chambers and hidden corners. It's a day filled with wonder and discovery, but as exhaustion sets in, we realized it was a good decision hiring a tuktuk and a knowledgeable guide.

​With the expertise of our guide, we embark on a temple run, learning about the rich history and intricate architecture of each site. From the imposing faces of Bayon to the jungle-clad ruins of Ta Prohm, every temple tells a story of Cambodia's storied past.

Exporing the temples went on for days, but the stories behind them got more and more interesting. Craftsmanship and how they presented their stories and afterlife is just breathtaking.

In Siem Reap, every corner reveals a piece of Cambodia's rich tapestry of history and culture. And amidst the temples of Angkor Wat, the past comes alive, offering a glimpse into a world that has captivated travelers for centuries.

Cambodia is a must visit right after Laos! 

Strung Treng, Cambodia --  where the allure of city life blends seamlessly with the enchantment of the jungle. Our one-week escapade promises days filled with exploration amidst urban landscapes and nights spent immersed in the depths of the jungle.

After our jungle adventure, we felt energized and eager to explore more of Strung Treng. With a spirit of adventure, we set out to uncover the region's stunning waterfalls.

In the days that followed, we hiked through rough terrain and ventured off the main paths to find these natural wonders. From the roaring Pha Lai Kong to the peaceful pools of Sopheakmith, each waterfall we discovered left us in awe, showcasing nature's raw power and beauty.

Exploring Don Det felt like stepping into a dream. With no cars in sight, we roamed along dusty paths lined with vibrant flowers and rustic bungalows, soaking in the island's natural beauty with every step.

But the true magic of Don Det revealed itself in the simplest of moments. Whether we were watching the sunset paint the sky in brilliant hues from the riverbank or savoring the flavors of Lao cuisine at a riverside cafe, each experience was a reminder to slow down and appreciate the beauty of the present.

In this area, there are bridges connecting to the other islands, opening up new possibilities for exploration. Eager to venture further, we rented an electric motorcycle, allowing us to roam beyond the confines of Don Det and discover the hidden gems of the surrounding islands. It was a liberating experience, as we meandered along winding paths and stumbled upon secluded beaches and charming villages, each more picturesque than the last.

We stayed around 10 days here to completely relax, immersing ourselves in the laid-back rhythm of island life. From lazy afternoons spent lounging in hammocks to leisurely bike rides along the riverside, every moment was a precious reminder of the beauty of slowing down and embracing the simple joys of life.

The time came to bid farewell to Don Det, we knew we were leaving behind more than just an island paradise. We were leaving behind a piece of ourselves – a reminder of the importance of finding moments of peace and tranquility amidst the chaos of everyday life. Don Det may be small, but its impact on our hearts was immeasurable, and we'll carry its memory with us wherever we go.

 Starting from Thakhek, we embarked on a 450-kilometer circuit of sheer cliffs and breathtaking vistas. Some roads were perilous, with narrow paths hugging the edge, but each turn brought a rush of adrenaline and unparalleled scenery.

​Amidst our Thakhek Loop adventure, we encountered the awe-inspiring Konglor Cave. A thrilling boat ride through its dark waters took us beneath towering limestone formations, leaving us captivated by Laos' natural wonders. 

​ Konglor Cave boasts the title of the world's longest navigable cave, stretching over 7 kilometers in length. It was an experience that stirred our sense of wonder and ignited our passion for exploration.

Another highlight is kayaking in Spring River.

As the sun set on another day of adventure, we reflected on the challenges overcome and the memories made. The Thakhek Loop had tested us in ways we never imagined, but it left us with a sense of accomplishment and a longing for more.

After a month and a half lounging and eating in Philippines, it was time to reunite with my husband and start new adventures exploring new places.

From Pakse, it was a rollercoaster ride through the Bolaven Plateau. Villages straight out of postcards, jungles teeming with life, and waterfalls that seemed to defy gravity. Eevrywhere you look is  a glimpse of Laos' rich culture.

Evenings were for storytelling, sharing laughs and swapping tales with fellow riders under a sky lit up with stars. It was moments like these that made us realize the true beauty of travel – the connections we make along the way.

Highlight: Mystic Mountain! Just getting here is a few hours journey and a challenging road. it's worth it!

​​As we looped back to Pakse, we are excited for the next adventure. The Pakse Loop might have been just a slice of Laos, but it had left an indelible mark on our souls.

Closing out our Pakse adventure, we found ourselves on the Laos side of the Mekong River, gazing across at the glowing sunset on the Thailand side.

As we explored this archaeological marvel, our footsteps traced the pathways of ancient worshippers. The remnants of temples dedicated to various gods stood tall, their weathered columns whispering tales of devotion and grandeur. Among the ruins, intricate mosaics adorned the floors, each piece meticulously crafted, a testament to the skill of ancient artisans. Walking upon these delicate artworks, we marveled at the artistry and craftsmanship that had endured centuries.

The island's theaters, where once the ancient Greeks gathered for performances, seemed to come alive with the echoes of past dramas and comedies. As we stood amidst the stone seats, we could almost hear the applause and laughter of audiences long gone. It was a surreal experience, as if the spirits of ancient actors and playwrights lingered, sharing their stories with those willing to listen.

One of the most iconic sights was the Terrace of the Lions, where a row of majestic marble lions stood proudly, their silent gaze surveying the island. Each lion, a symbol of strength and majesty, seemed to guard the secrets of Delos, preserving the island's grandeur for generations to come.

Our visit to Delos was not just a leisurely exploration; it was intricately tied to the work we do in Mykonos. It provided us with a deeper understanding of the region's history and culture, enriching our perspective as we continued our endeavors. The ancient marvels of Delos became more than just relics; they became a source of inspiration, reminding us of the enduring legacy of the past and the profound connections that bind us to the ancient world.

In the midst of these archaeological wonders, we found not only the remnants of an ancient civilization but also a profound sense of awe and reverence. Delos, with its temples, theaters, mosaics, and silent lions, became a living testament to the resilience of human creativity and the enduring allure of the past.

​During our time in Sinaia, we explored a lot, including a ski slope. Since our friends are always skiing, they brought all the bridal party to the ski slopes where they ski every year and spent 2 days there. 
It was a unique experience to see the slope without snow, understanding how it looks in different seasons. The guests marveled at the transformation of the ski slope from winter wonderland to lush greenery, appreciating the diverse beauty that Sinaia had to offer.

Mount Taygetos, a grand mountain in Peloponnese, is wrapped in ancient Greek tales. While Athens sweltered in a heatwave, we sought refuge in its cool shadow. In the mountains, we wore long sleeves in the morning to keep warm and bundled up in jackets at night to stay cozy.

The mountain's weather played tricks on us, making the day start gently and the night fall with a chilly hush. It felt like the mountain itself was telling stories of old, where gods roamed and myths were born.

Amidst these temperature changes, we sensed the mountain's ancient magic. It seemed like the gods themselves were guiding the weather, reminding us of their timeless stories. In the heart of Mount Taygetos, we didn't just explore; we felt like we were living inside a myth. With every breeze and shiver, the ancient legends came alive, making us a part of the mountain's enchanting tale.

Mystras, also known as Mistras or Myzithras, is a captivating archaeological site located near the modern town of Sparti. This UNESCO World Heritage Site dates back to the 13th century, once serving as a Byzantine stronghold and later as a significant cultural and political center during the Byzantine Empire. Walking through its stone pathways feels akin to stepping into a time capsule, where the whispers of the past come to life.

I'm excited to share a truly special adventure that recently captured our hearts. It all began with a dear friend's sea baptism in the enchanting waters of the Peloponnese region. This marked the beginning of a soul-stirring journey that led us to the remarkable Lighthouse Tenaro, the southernmost point of continental Greece and, incredibly, the southernmost tip of mainland Europe.

In the tranquil embrace of the Peloponnese's serene waters, we bore witness to a profound and moving event — our dear friend's sea baptism. This intimate ceremony unfolded against the backdrop of the gentle lapping of the waves and the golden hues of the setting sun. As our friend immersed in the waters, we felt an unspoken connection between their spirit and the vast expanse of the sea.
This sacred ritual became a testament to the deep interplay between spirituality and the natural world. The rhythmic cadence of the waves seemed to echo the spiritual rhythms, creating an atmosphere of harmony and reverence. It was in this moment that we recognized the Peloponnese not merely as a geographical location but as a sanctuary, a space where the spiritual and natural realms converged seamlessly.
This experience laid the foundation for our upcoming adventure, infusing our hearts with a sense of reverence for the wonders of nature and the spirituality it inspires. As we embarked on our journey towards the southernmost tip of continental Greece, this newfound awareness accompanied us, shaping our perspective and infusing our expedition with a profound sense of purpose and connection.
