Cheap tickets is one of the key parts of how we travel, finding them requires patience and a lot of flexibility. --At the time that we are writing this blog, there was another 1€ ticket sale!!-- Keep up to date with this promotions and sign up in our newsletter.
Most of our flights (Rhodes, Santorini, Mykonos, etc..) are the same price!
Day 1. One of the only reasons we wake up early is if we are flying, so to still have enough hours of rest, the plan is to find a nice outdoor place to sleep once we get there. Our motto is we are not traveling to sleep or eat very well (although we also eat and sleep good most of the time in our trips), we can always do this at home.
When you SAVE the money for expensive hotel and fancy restaurants, you magically have the funds for your next trips! Arriving in Rhodes, we rented a car, drove along the coast and finally decided to relax at Kopria Beach.
There were free sun beds with umbrellas (very helpful with the Greek sun!). Since it was still really early for us, we decided that this is the perfect place for us to take some zzzz’s for the day ahead!
After 6 hours of relaxing (power nap) on the beach, we decided to head back to the city. On our way back, this was our background driving at sunset.
Day 2. 7 Springs
Quick experiment: When the moon is just above the horizon, stand in one spot and have another friend stand on the other side of the beach while still being able to see the moon. Notice that the reflection of the moon is always pointing towards the observer at all times! You are seeing that the moon reflection is going to you BUT, at the same time pointing to your friend from their vantage point. How cool is that?!
Do you want a cooler visual explanation ?
Day 3. Monolithos Castle
It's a 70 km drive from Rhodes town. We were in a view point but every 10 minutes or so, clouds come, you can’t see anything and also lots and lots of buses are stopping for the tourists to take photos.
With all the busy-ness of this place, and the heat of the Greek sun, it's time for us to head to a place where we can sightsee and spend our time!
We headed to the southern-west part of Rhodes, Prasonisi (traslation: Green Island). In the winter, this is an island, but in the summer, water level goes down and the island is connected to main land Rhodes by a strip of land. There are lots and lots of water sports here. There are more people doing watersports than swimming! Mostly, this area is for windsurfing and kitesurfing.
After the sightseeing, we drove around again looking for a nice spot to chill and cook. We came across Anthony Quinn Bay. This bay is where a lot of scenes were shot from Guns of Navarone where Anthony Quinn is the main character - thus the name.
Day 4. Bay of Kallithea.
Kallithea literally translates to "The best view" . The first thing you can see when you arrive is that there is a beach on the right hand side. We were ready to sit and relax there until a guy told us that to sit in sun lounger costs 10 euros per person. So we went around the area first to see what else is there. From the beach you can see that there is a fancy looking structure just ahead. There were no signs and we needed to ask in their ticket booth what was inside.
Turns out that this is Kallithea Thermal Springs. It was believed that these are healing thermal springs. What they built was one of the best designed architectural structure of that era. This is a site where it's ideal to dive and snorkel because there are lots of things to see in this crystal emerald waters.
The 3 euros ticket was so worth it! We spent the rest of the afternoon there chilling and swimming until it was time to head home.
Day 5. Valley of the Butterflies.
When we came there, there were lots of butterflies only in certain places. The area was magical, like walking into a fairytale. There is a paved path that will guide you throughout the whole "park". The reason this specific butterflies come and breed here is because the scent of Oriental Sweetgum trees attract them.
It was about an hour or so of walking and exploring this place and it's better to go before they close so the sun is not on your head while hiking uphill and also to avoid so much crowd.
For our last night in Rhodes, we headed back to the old town to have our final walk on the streets of the past. In our minds, these very walls and floors were the same walls and floors the real knights and the whole town were walking on and living inside of in their time, how cool is that!
