Tzoumerka is a lesser known destination even for locals. This might just be the Greeks' best kept secret! Stone mansions, cobblestone streets, scenic vistas and quaint squares with Greeks drinking their fave coffee! Every corner of this place is instagrammable. This place is also a paradise for outdoor activities : trekking, hiking, canyoning, rafting and even just by looking what is around you. The Lake below is called "Limni Kremaston" and it was in our way to Tzoumerka roadtrip and Free camping : tzoumerkaThis is a mountain range that is surrounded by canyons, peaks above 2000m, crystal clear rivers, forests and waterfalls. For most of the year it is covered by snow that makes them an ideal destination for warm Greek summer days. To reach Tzoumerka is around 500 kms so we decided to split the distance into two days.
Day 2. We started driving early, the view and the road is amazing. We camped in Kalarites, which is 1200 m above sea level. This will be our base while we are exploring the area. This is our "Green Palace" at the center of the 47 villages here making it easy for us to plan activities around. We found the "Perfect" camping spot for our palace. 1000 stars hotel :> We have a crystal clear river with big pools to swim in, road side, surrounded by trees, so shade throughout the day, lots of hike routes starts nearby and river trekking is always a great option. Day 3. "Pyli Paradeisou" translated to Heaven's Gate, is one of the most beautiful canyons in Greece (you can even feel how special this place is!). It's hiding here in the Tzoumerka region. G has been longing to go to this specific canyon for almost 5 years now. This place is a bit far from home so it was also a good excuse for a roadtrip! The canyon is only accessible for a very limited time per year because of the volume of water that flows through here.
In the middle of the hike, there is this coffee shop with this view before you continue to the waterfalls above! What an amazing place to enjoy your coffee. Highly recommended. Day 5. Anemotrypa Cave is one of the most beautiful caves in Greece. This cave was explored in the 60's and 'till now around 250 meters is accessible and there is an additional 100 meters to be opened to the public in 2020. Be amazed by the stalactites and stalagmites and explore the magic world of the caves! This is a guided tour from 10:00 - 17:00!
Day 7. Kefalovriso Waterfall is about 30-40 minutes hike. The route starts at 1300 meters in the Pramanta Mountain Refuge. The trail is very easy to identify and to follow and there is not any single difficulty. In fact, is an ideal hike for beginners but also for families with kids. When you arrive near the waterfall, the views are really amazing and the surrounding environment is one of the nicest! Day 8. Melisourgoi means beekeepers and most of the locals are. Matsouki still has their traditional watermill and it's still working until now. Our adventure in Tzoumerka is brief but incredibly rich. There are tons and tons of hikes and adventures all over this region. You might need more than one summer to explore everything in Tzoumerka and maybe it's not even enough. This unique region deserves all the time you can give to explore. There are lots of remote villages, but each has it's own unique characteristic that will definitely leave a mark. Because of limited time, we were not able to visit all 47 villages but for the places that we did visit, we had a really great time hanging out and chatting with the locals. If authentic Greek experience is what you are after, Tzoumerka is the place to be and more importantly, it's still under the radar! bonus - Valia KaldaThis is a bonus content also in northern Greece. This is one of the few places that can be compared to Tzoumerka region. Life and nature thrives at Valia Kalda. Already being in Northern Greece, we decided to spend a few days here! Feel free to share your thoughts :)
