Arachova is a mountain village that is located in the foot of Mt. Parnassos. This is a favorite winter destination for celebrities, ski and snow board lovers in Greece or if you just want to have a dreamy "traditional" village atmosphere with amazing restaurants and bars to pair it with.
We are so stoked to have already started our adventures this year, hooray!
It was rainy right before and after the new year so we patiently waited and once the weather cleared up, we were ready to be on the road again. The photos above is what we were seeing throughout the trip, it's our "movie" for hours of driving to the snowy mountains.
As with most of our trips, we had one goal during this winter trip, we want snow! G has lots of experience with snow, ice, mountains. etc., but for me, it was only in 2017 at Doksa Lake where I experienced real snow for the first time. Then in 2018 we were in Norway for new year's which is like a winter wonderland where everything is white, like how I saw winter in movies! It became like a tradition that for the new year, we go somewhere with snow. Since we live near the sea, we need to drive quite far to find and play with snow.
Our old North face tent (Green palace) , served us for many years, but thanks to it's lifetime warranty, North face replaced it with the new Domey3 (Yellow Palace) and now it's time to put it to a stress test :)
I know i know, Camping in snow might look nice and cozy since it looks fluffy and soft, but it really is COLD! My feet got a bit colder than usual :P Camping in winter requires proper equipment , warm technical clothes and skills that comes with experience. There is a magical feeling of freedom and enjoyment and that is why we love sleeping outdoors!
We found this place where you have a massive place with a decent amount of snow to play with and it's also a favorite destination for a lot of people.
We pinned the place so you can easily find it, it's always gathering lots of crowd and there's lots of space for everyone. This is a 2-hour drive from Athens, and it's definitely worth the drive.
After exploring nature, we also went around the city for the ambience and to see other cute restaurants and cafes.
We had the opportunity to warm up ourselves in a beautifully decorated cafe surrounded by snow, We had warm drinks and warm desserts at this low altitude (1250m) refuge in Oiti.
This is the view form the place that we spent our night in Delfi, you can see everything, from snowy mountains down to the sea level ( the small city that you can spot at the end is Called Itea)
The ancients site that you will meet in your road from Delfi to Arachova definitely deserve your attention. If you have 3-4 hours to spend, then definitely go for it. Delfi, a.k.a. the Oracle of Delfi has huge story behind it but if you don't have this time you can just park your car as we did and take a look to your surroundings. We postponed a full exploration of the ruins for another time
Just out of Arachova we went for a hike, a hike above the clouds :)
We even had some time to hike to a hill before heading home and the view as you can all expect was spectacular .
Stay tuned because our next adventure will not include snow but lots sun ? |
